Building a Legacy

In 1946, Paul Moak Opens its Doors Downtown

Incorporated in 1946, Paul Moak’s automotive history begins with a Pontiac franchise on Pascagoula Street (the present-day location of Thalia Mara Hall), operating under the name Madison Auto Sales. Paul G. Moak, Sr. had moved to Jackson after finishing high school in the Ruth community of rural southeast Lincoln County. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, and upon his return, was hired as a general manager for Mr. Colin Lane, owner of Madison Auto Sales. In 1957, Mr. Moak, Sr. became part owner, and the business was renamed Lane-Moak Pontiac, Inc.

Throughout the Years, Many New Doors Opened

As the city of Jackson expanded its communication and cultural center, the Paul Moak Automotive dealership relocated to Jackson’s "Auto Row" on South State Street. The dealership name was changed to Paul Moak Pontiac, Inc. in 1972. Over the years, the Paul Moak South State Street location acquired additional brands to add to the Pontiac dealership. One of these brands was Honda, which launched stateside on the west coast in the late 1960s. Mr. Moak, Sr. contacted Honda, and Paul Moak Automotive was awarded the first Honda franchise in Mississippi in 1971. The Volvo franchise was obtained in 1977 and continues to be a mainstay for our company.

Setbacks Become Opportunities

Over our 70-year history, we have experienced daily life alongside our customers. In 1979, the Easter Flood covered South State Street with 6 feet of water and caused massive damage and loss to the facility and business. In 1983, the main Pontiac facility was hit by lightning during a massive thunder storm and the facility burned to the ground and took over a year to rebuild. We relocated our Honda dealership to a new facility in 1999 along I-55 between High Street and Fortification exits, followed by a second facility in 2008 for Volvo and our most recent vehicle franchise (in 2001), Paul Moak Subaru.

Our Family and Traditions Remain the Same

We are now in the third generation of our family to work daily in the business. Jeanne Moak Scarbrough joined the company in 1999 to start the dealership’s internet presence and continues to be involved in a number of internet activities. Her husband, John T. Scarbrough joined in 2002 and is now the General Manager of daily operations. Together with our employees, we strive daily to be a place where the citizens of the metro area and central Mississippi desire to do business. The automobile business is a competitive and challenging business.

Our Future is Determined by What We Do Today

The ability to remain in business for these 70 years and go through the floods and fires of life is based upon the willingness of the community to desire to do business with us. We have to earn our customers’ business each and every day in the various interactions that take place. We know that having a long past is no guarantee for the future. Our future is determined by what we do today in the way we interact with each other internally and how we interact with our customers.

Our company vision statement in part says, "Our vision is to continually strive to be an organization committed to excellence in all of our relationships with each other and with our customers." We are thankful to so many over the years that have chosen to be a part of the Paul Moak Automotive team. Without our current staff and those that came before us, we simply would not be here to celebrate our 70th anniversary. We continue to seek to grow to even greater heights in the years to come.

Partners With Our Community

As Paul Moak celebrates 70 years as a third-generation, family-owned and operated business right here in the heart of Mississippi, we are grateful to our community who has supported us and trusted us through the years. Our commitment to support the metro Jackson area can be seen in various partnerships with local charities and non-profits, as well as sponsorships of area events. We're grateful for the opportunity, not only to be a part of our community, but to serve it as well!

Our Paul Moak Subaru dealership is a part of the Subaru Love Promise initiative which is a commitment from our owners to do right by our community by partnering with nonprofit education, health, community, environment, and animal organizations - to set Subaru apart through our deeds.
